Do your job responsibilities include optimizing content? Mine do. I have a number of content optimization tools, but Frase is the one I use every day to help me transform existing content so it ranks better in search engines. What is Frase? Glad you asked. You will learn about this invaluable tool to help content writers create and optimize web copy. Read on:
What is Frase?
Frase is a cloud-based search engine optimization service, also known as SaaS (software as a service), that helps you create well-optimized content fast using Artificial Intelligence. It offers a lot of functionality for the research and writing process. Below are a number of Frase reviews, and you will see all of the robust features of the service.
Frase Features: How Frase Works
It can be difficult trying to define Frase because the software service provides many tools under one umbrella. It is a content editor, a keyword research tool (if you purchase the SEO add-on), and it provides a running content score in real-time so you can see exactly how your piece compares to the top-ranking pages on Google. Here is what you get when you subscribe to the service:
1. Question Ideas and Topic Research Tool
When you log into Frase to work on an article, you have two options: Create a new document or optimize an existing piece. Select which option you want and then add a target keyword or two or five. If you are on the basic plan, then you can add up to two target search queries. If you purchase the SEO add-on, then you can enter up to five.
When you add your keywords, Frase will scrape the internet and analyze the components of the top pages in the SERPs (search engine results pages). In some ways, this is like competitor analysis in that it determines what your “competitors” are doing so you can determine what needs to be done to produce a page that has the best chances of ranking very high.
During this analysis, Frase will populate the Research area with all kinds of data:
- Headings: You will see how each of the top pages is outlined, with the H2, H3, and H4 headers broken out.
- Questions: A good way to help rank higher is to answer questions. You will see the questions other pages ask and answer. You will also have access to Google’s People Also Ask questions, along with questions posed on Quora and Reddit.
- External Links: You also have the opportunity to peruse the outbound links contained on the top pages.
- Statistics: When you are writing informative and educational copy, adding statistics can help support your main thesis. Frase highlights them from the pages it scrapes.
- News & Related Sources: This is a neat addition to the offering. This section looks at stories in Google News and includes pages outside of the Top 20. Sometimes, very good pages are not in the Top 20 and can provide helpful insights.
- Wikipedia Topics: This section will let you research articles from Wikipedia without ever leaving the Frase Content environment.
2. Detailed Content Briefs
All of the data collected under the Research tab through Frase’s content curation process will help inform not only the copy of the article you are writing or optimizing, but will also help you create the structure, or outline, for your piece. You will have sufficient information to create content briefs.
Here is what you can add to your AI-generated detailed content briefs:
- Guidelines: Content briefs are designed to serve as a guiding document for writers. This Guidelines area instructs your writer about what the goal of the piece is, who the target audience is, when the deadline is, who the project owner is, what the average word count is, and how many headings there should be.
- People Also Ask: These are the questions Google curates from people using its search service. These questions can be used for an FAQ section or serve as sections in the article.
- SERP: You will see the SEO titles and meta descriptions from the Top 20 articles for your search terms.
- Topics: This is a list of key topics covered by the top-ranking pages.
- Topic Clusters: This gathers together and expands on the topics. The topics are broad in nature, but the Topic Clusters section is more granular. For example, one topic might be Keyword. In the Topic Cluster section, you will see Keyword: Keyword research tool, keyword research phrase, target keyword, etc.
- Headers: These top headers are featured in the SERPs.
- Questions: These do not come from Google, but are the common questions found in the articles.
- Statistics: As mentioned above, these are the stats found on the top pages.
- Hyperlinks: These are the external links discussed above.
As a reminder, all of the data points above will be automatically generated into a content brief, if you so choose. If you want, you can choose to generate the items in a list or a table. Do yourself a favor and choose to insert the SERPs, Topics, Topic Clusters, and Questions as a table. It provides for a better display and grouping of information. The automated briefs will provide you with a variety of content ideas.
Outline Builder
As you are building out your brief, Frase has a tool to help you create a content outline. Choose the Outline tab, open up the SERP explorer, see which headers you like, click on them to add them to your own list, and then you can paste it into your content brief.
Frase AI: Automated Draft
If you have the SEO add-on, Frase will create for you content for each section header. It will rewrite competitors’ content, summarize that content, or write new AI-generated content.
Note: Be careful with any AI writer you use, whether it is Frase or another service. The quality of the output is spotty and sometimes inaccurate. Also, you do not want to copy anyone else’s content.
3. Write Your Content
Now that you have your content brief and outline, you can now begin writing the best-optimized content around. As you write, keep an eye on the content score to see how you measure up with the best of the best articles.
Frase Content Analytics
You will see your score, sometimes referred to as a topic score or SEO score, in a bar format. There will be a percentage displayed letting you know how many of the long-tail keywords are contained in your article. When you look at the score, you will see a green bar and a yellow line. The yellow line indicates the average score of the top-ranking competitors. Once the green bar surpasses that line, then you will be among the highest-scoring articles. That is your goal.
4. Content Optimization
This is where Frase really shines. It will analyze an existing piece of content and provide the information you need to create high-quality content that will rank better. When you look at the list of long-tail keywords that are missing, then you can start to fill in that content gap.
All of this information is found in the Optimize tab, and if you embrace the SEO tools in Frase, you will produce high-ranking content.
5. Frase Answer Engine
I have the Answer Engine on my website, but I really have not paid much attention to it. (Sorry!) So, this information is taken directly from the Frase website.
The world of tech is beginning to respond. Companies like Frase are creating solutions to these problems. Frase uses the same AI-driven question-answering technology to provide a Google Assistant-type experience for your website users.
Frase’s Answer Engine functions like a chatbot (but a whole lot more advanced.) Users are able to have a conversation and find the answers they need, creating a more engaging customer experience.
As they ask questions, the answer engine records user data and is able to provide the optimum answer without users opening a new tab. This data allows you to see how well your content is answering user questions.
And the best part is that this data provides actionable SEO insights, allowing you to dominate Google rich results while other websites keep guessing and hoping.
Frase SEO add-on and AI writer
The Frase SEO add-on, which you can purchase for an additional fee, gives you access to keyword search volume, backlink, and domain authority data. When you initiate a keyword research process, the monthly search volume gives you insights into viable keywords. The more a term is searched, the more chances you have of someone finding your website.
The SEO add-on also includes the Frase AI writing tool. The development team has built all of the company’s AI-powered tools from the ground up. They are constantly adding to their AI prompts. It includes a rewrite, and you can tell it to write your next sentence, you can indicate what kind of tone you want (casual? formal? professional?), and you can use it to create an AI-generated draft based on your outline of headers.
As noted previously, when you purchase the SEO add-on, you can enter up to five search queries (up from two in the basic plan).
Frase Pros
I love Frase. I truly do use it for my business every day. Because of its versatility, I have been able to get rid of a very expensive content marketing tool. Here are some of my favorite things related to Frase:
- User experience: The team is very receptive to user feedback, and the staff is very active on in the company’s Facebook group. When you get an email response, it is from a Frase team member, not some outsourced organization.
- It improves the content writing process: Frase delivers everything you need for content creation. If you want quick content production, this content tool will deliver.
- The content score function:I love knowing how I compare to the top-ranking articles.
- The Research tab: When I write or optimize articles, I want to know how many words I need to write. The Research tab provides info on word count, header, links, and images. Of those four metrics, the word count is my main concern.
Frase Cons
- Sometimes the UI can be difficult: The Frase team is constantly improving the service. This means there are a lot of changes. Sometimes, a popular feature you liked gets moved and makes it difficult to find. Early on, I had a lot of problems with the editor, but they have made tremendous improvements.
- The AI writer:I purchased the SEO add-on primarily for the AI writer. I have other tools I use to find relevant keywords and keyword density, so I didn’t need the add-on for my SEO strategy. However, the monthly fee was a good deal for unlimited AI output. However, I wasn’t pleased with what I was getting. This is not a knock on Frase. I do not like a lot of AI-generated content (I have six or seven AI tools).
Frase Reviews from Other Sources Around the Web
I love using Frase. I think it is a great tool for creating articles and optimizing existing ones. Frankly, I was in disbelief when I read some negative Frase reviews because I have had nothing but a positive experience with the software and with the development team. However, I guess that is not the case for everybody. Here you will find what others say.
Frase Reviews on Trustpilot
When I looked at the Frase reviews on Trustpilot, I noticed it had 71% 5-star reviews and 9% 4-star reviews. I immediately thought, not bad … 80% of reviewers have a positive reaction. However, that was not the entire story. There were 17% 1-star reviews. As I read them, I can honestly say I didn’t think we were talking about the same company. Customer service has been great. The development team is very active on Facebook. The product is continually improved. But, I guess we don’t all have the same reaction. Overall, Frase has a 3.1-star rating on Trustpilot. Here is one review I agreed with:
Frase Reviews on G2
When I read some of the Frase reviews on the G2 website, I was pleased to see a rating of 4.8 stars. This is more in line with my user experience. Of the 202 reviews, 191 were 5 stars and 8 were 4 stars. There was just a single 1-star review.
Frase Alternatives
The content optimization field is a growing market. I have used Marketmuse (this is the expensive service I refunded), Outranking, NeuronWriter, TextFocus, and WriterZen. Each is OK, but none of them offers the depth and breadth that Frase does.
Frase Pricing Plans
Frase has three pricing plans and offers a 5-day money-back guarantee. Here are the plans:
