Earn More Writing Review

When I left journalism at the beginning of January 2018, I thought for sure search engine optimization website audits would be my main source of income. Little did I know then I would earn more writing as a freelancer than I ever did as a journalist.

During my journalism career that spanned three decades, I earned a lot of writing awards from the Associated Press Society of Ohio and the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists. The awards ranged from Best Explanatory Journalism to Best Business Writer to Best Medical/Science Reporting to Best Investigative Journalist to Best News Writer and probably a few more I forgot about.

While I know how to write, and I can write in several different forms, I never made the kind of money I do as a freelance writer/content creator. And, you want to know something that makes this even funnier: I paid $199 to take a writing course from a writer with far less experience than me, and let me say that Holly Johnson’s Earn More Writing course has been an incredible investment — some of the best money I ever spent.

What is the Earn More Writing Course?

Holly Johnson worked in a mortuary. She had a passion for writing, but never sought out writing opportunities. That is, until she and her husband, Greg Johnson, created their Club Thrifty blog. After writing for the blog, she began seeking out paid writing gigs. She worked two full-time jobs: At the mortuary and as a writer. After she wrote full-time for a year, she made enough money to quit her day job at the funeral home.

Holly is incredibly driven. She started out making $75 to $150 per piece, and now she commands between $300-$1,500 per assignment. As a journalist, I didn’t make $1,500 in two weeks, and she can make that much for one piece (which she will knock out in less than a day).

After surpassing six figures as a freelance writer working from her home, Holly decided to take what she learned and put into an online course: Holly Johnson’s Earn More Writing Course

The course has eight main modules:

  1. How to Establish Your Blog and Brand
  2. How to Build Your Portfolio and Pitch Clients
  3. Defending Your Workday
  4. How to Transition from Broke Writing to Rich Writing
  5. Finding and Keeping Your Dream Clients
  6. Actually Getting Paid
  7. Get More Work by Making Editors Happy
  8. Take Your Income into the Stratosphere

Additionally, Holly offers a lot of resources for freelancers, access to her private group on Facebook, and several bonuses, like how to get rich ghostwriting for CEOs, along with guides for understand what editors want, the anatomy of a perfect blog post, an actual pitch letter Holly sent out, and a list of businesses with blogs.

Where I found value in the Earn More Writing Course

As one who was well-versed in writing, I was more than happy to invest the $199 in Holly’s freelance writing course because she offered something I never had to worry about: How to find clients.

And, let me just say, the possibility of earning six figures as a writer was a pretty good enticement for me. In my best year in journalism, I grossed $34,200. So, I think you can see why I was willing to take a $199 chance. The possibility of tripling my income was enough for me to make the investment. I spend about $180 a year on Netflix. I spend another $120 a year on Spotify. I pay $108 a year for Scribd, an ebook subscription service. I pay $400 a year purely for entertainment, so paying $200 for a year’s worth of access to Holly’s Earn More Writing Course was a no-brainer for me.

Getting back to the clients. As a journalist, I didn’t have to worry about clients. I covered government officials, education officials, business leaders, community leaders, and everyday folks. I had a constant supply of material to write, and while I considered myself as answerable to all of my readers, I really only had to worry about one client: My editor.

Holly is a go-getter. Her drive and determination is infectious. She lays out how to find clients and where to find clients. Holly didn’t do a bunch of keyword research and figure out what to put in her course. Rather, she worked hard and figured out what worked.

What you get in the Earn More Writing Course are tried-and-true strategies to build a freelance writing career. I didn’t need Holly to teach me how to write, but I did need her expertise in finding, cultivating and sustaining clients.

The One Part of the Earn More Writing Course that blew me away

When you enroll in Holly Johnson’s Earn More Writing Course, you get to join her private Facebook group. The group is a true gem, and provides value that cannot be calculated.

Here is why I love the Facebook group so much:

  • Every morning, Holly shares what she is working on and details how much money she will earn for each piece. On a typical day, she earns more than $1,000 through her freelance writing.
  • Those daily posts provide motivation and encouragement to get some work done or to pitch clients. She always asks what you are working on.
  • I have developed some good friendships via the private Facebook group. I have been able to have great conversations with other writers. They have been able to help me, and I have been able to help them.
  • Also, Holly will help her students find freelance writing work. If you need some one-on-one help, she will work with you.

I cannot start my work day without seeing what’s happening in the private Facebook group. It is that valuable, and I treasure it so much.

Are you ready to work toward a six-figure writing income?

I am now in my third year of business since leaving journalism. I miss it every day, and I loved writing for The Daily Record in Wooster, Ohio. However, I am on pace to invoice clients close to six figures this year.

I have enough work that I am contracting with other writers to provide content for my clients. The course has been a great investment. It has helped me find clarity in where to focus my efforts.

Coronavirus pandemic update No. 1

In the third and fourth quarters of 2019, revenue from freelance writing helped my business generate income at levels I have never seen. The momentum continued into 2020.

Then, the pandemic hit. I had no clue what was going to happen. I was waiting for the bottom to fall out.

Funny thing is, it didn’t.

April 2020 was the best month I ever had. In one month, I generated just a tad less than I made in six months as a journalist. I bill clients on the first of the month. So, work done in April is billed on May 1. Here are the invoices I sent out in May 2020 (I use Wave Accounting.)

A few special projects helped increase my income that month. However, freelance writing was the bread-and-butter. One of those invoices was from a client I landed thanks to Holly posting the opportunity in her Earn More Writing Facebook group.

Following the tremendous high of May’s invoices, business finally started to slow. Compared to the first five months of 2020, the following two months saw revenue drop 24%. But, you know what, it was still twice as much as I made as a journalist.

And, I can honestly say Holly Johnson’s Earn More Writing course, played a role in helping me earn more writing … before the pandemic and after it.

Coronavirus pandemic update No. 2

As the coronavirus pandemic has continued into late 2020, the company I formed, Wooster Media Group LLC, continues to bring in revenue at about twice my journalism salary. Part of this is due to the bonus of being a member of the Earn More Writing Facebook group. This has put me in contact with other writers and bloggers where I have needed their services, and they have needed mine.

You likely figured out how I make money when people in the Earn More Writing group need my services, but I will let you in on a little secret: I have made money when paying others for their services. That will be the subject of a future blog post, but rest assured, it is absolutely true.

Investing in Holly Johnson’s Earn More Writing Course was one of the best decisions I made after journalism. What are you waiting for? Make the investment in the course today in order to help create a better-paying tomorrow.
